LinkedIn Has New Ways to Drive Targeted Traffic to Your Site

When you think about traffic-driving social networks, LinkedIn may not be the first thing that comes to your mind, and truth be told, there’s a good chance it will not drive the kind of traffic Twitter or Facebook will for your site. However, some sites have found it to be a quite valuable traffic tool, and the company seems to want to further cement its status as such. Do you get substantial traffic from LinkedIn? Talk to ArisYulianta and Friends… . LinkedIn reportedly has about 65 million members. That may not seem like much compared to Facebooks 400 million (likely well over that by now in reality), but LinkedIn can bring a different brand of relevance to the table. Earlier this year, we talked to entrepreneur Lewis Howes (who claims that LinkedIn is one of the top traffic sources to his blogs) about how powerful LinkedIn can be for driving traffic . He had written on the subject previously at Darren Rowse’s ProBlogger. “You need to take into consideration that LinkedIn has the highest average household income per user over any other social networking site (even NYTimes.com and BusinessWeek.com readers),” Howes told us. “That being said, these are business decision makers you are targeting with your traffic from LinkedIn. The network is for real, and it will only continue to grow in time…” What’s New LinkedIn has announced some changes to its news sharing options, and some of them just may help content spread more like it would on Twitter.

How Business Questions About Social Media Have Changed in a Year

Last year we looked at a study about the state of social media marketing , looking at common questions businesses had about it. A lot has happened in the social media world in a year’s time, and many businesses have gotten into the swing of things since then. However, Michael Stelzner, author of the study and founder of SocialMediaExaminer.com shared findings with us from this year’s version of the study, and businesses still have plenty of questions. “A year ago, businesses were uncertain about social media,” says Stelzner. “Now it’s here to stay and companies are rapidly adopting social media marketing. According to his findings, the majority of marketers surveyed (about 1,900) have either just begun using social media or have only been using it for a few months: “Measuring the return on investment for social media is the hottest question on marketers minds right now,” Stelzner tells WebProNews. “Most marketers are seeing great value with their social media campaigns, but they just cannot figure out how to measure their results.” Here are the top ten questions businesses have about social media marketing, based on the analysis of 1,356 open-ended responses: Top Ten Questions 1. How do I measure social media return on investment? 2. What are the social media marketing best practices? 3. How do I best manage my time with social media? 4. How do I reach my target markets with social media? 5. How do I generate traffic and leads using social media? 6. How do I implement social media tactics? 7. What are the latest social media trends? 8. How do I get started? 9. How do I integrate my social media activities? 10. How do I evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of each platform? One thing worth noting is that last year, the top question was related to tactics, but now it’s ROI. Perhaps businesses have learned some effective tactics in a year’s time, and have realized that these vary depending on needs and goals. Another significant change is that a year ago, one of the top questions was “Does social media marketing work?” and this isn’t even on the list anymore. It’s become abundantly clear over the past year that if you figure out how to do it right, it works. Brands have confirmed this time and time again. Stelzner notes that his survey indicates marketing interest has fallen off significantly, with 81% either indicating they will not use MySpace or will decrease their use of it. “Another hot finding is that 81% of marketers will actually be increasing their use of blogs,” he adds. “That came as a surprise to us.” It is indeed a bit surprising that so many would indicate an increase in blog use, but that is simply because their is this false notion out there that social networks are replacing blogs, and as we’ve discussed on numerous occasions, it’s just not the case. Stelzner’s extensive report can be viewed here . It’s full of interesting stats and graphical information.

Attempted Click Fraud Rate Surges In Q1

In the first quarter of 2010 the average attempted click fraud rate increased from 25.7 percent in Q4 2009 to 29. 2 percent in Q1 2010, representing a 34 percent year-over-year increase from Q1 2009, according to a new report from Anchor Intelligence. Anchor Intelligence told WebProNews the record attempted click fraud rate can be attributed to dramatic growth in botnet scale and volume around the globe. The countries with the highest attempted click fraud rates were Vietnam (35.4%), Australia (35.2%), and the U.S. (35%). The majority of this traffic was due to high velocity botnet traffic and coordinated click fraud rings. This increase in botnet click fraud also caused a significant surge in attempted click fraud in the U.K., from 18 percent in Q4 to 32 percent in Q1. “As Internet usage has grown in countries lacking appropriate cybersecurity measures, more and more computers have become infected with malware and used as click fraud zombies,” said Ken Miller, CEO of Anchor Intelligence . “By releasing this report, we hope to convey the importance of advertising with ad networks and search engines that partner with third-parties such as Anchor to certify their traffic quality.” The jump in botnet activity across the Anchor Intelligence network is consistent with other accounts of corrupt activity originating from compromised computers around the world. Recent reports from McAfee and Google identified a surge in cyber attacks against blogs criticizing mining projects in Vietnam. In addition, in December and January, over thirty companies were targeted by cyber attacks origination from China that were designed to steal personal data from corporate networks.
