Yellow Pages iPhone App Gets Voice Search

Voice search is one of the more convenient features of phones these days (at least when it works). AT&T Interactive has launched the latest version of its Yellow Pages app YPMobile, and it comes with voice search, which should make the app a great deal more useful. “As mobile consumers increasingly rely on their mobile device to find and immediately use local information, we are focused on integrating new features to help users easily navigate their everyday lives,” says David Williams, vice president of mobile product management at AT&T Interactive. “The addition of voice search complements the text-based local search experience by expanding the situations in which users can use the YPmobile App, making finding nearby businesses even easier.” In addition to Voice Search, the app also comes equipped with new map-based search functionality, and integration with Facebook and Twitter – users can broadcast their newly-discovered “hot spots.” Given the popularity location sharing is attracting these days, some may go for this. The app is available for free at Apple’s App Store . Recently AT&T Interactive also made its Buzz.com social local search product available to the public. Google Buzz, which still seems to be struggling to catch on with any sort of mainstream audience (or even a sizable niche one), has been given another opportunity to connect with people.

Is Google Buzz A Flop?

Earlier this year Google added a new product to the already overflowing social-space. Its name was Buzz and it instantly found itself in the same category ( mainly for the built-in Gmail userbase ) alongside both Twitter and Facebook. Based on all the hype surrounding Buzz, it seemed we were getting ready for the fight of social-space supremacy. Fast-forward a few months After the initial hype-fest died down, and the dust settled, most of the positive buzz has dissipated. What we’re left with are privacy concerns , a rampant spam problem and copyright issues from users. In an effort not to be totally negative in regards to Buzz, it should be noted that Google has been very quick addressing / fixing certain aspects of the service. Do you think Google Buzz is a flop? Talk to ArisYulianta and Friends… what you think .

Google Maps Gets More Useful on BlackBerry

Google introduced a new version of Google Maps for BlackBerry devices today. There are quite a few significant features that come along with it. Search by Voice, one of the most convenient features of searching from mobile devices in general, is included with this version. “Simply press and hold the green ‘call’ button, speak your search, and see your results quickly appear without typing a single letter,” explains Ole CaveLie, Software Engineer on the Google Mobile Team. “Try it now for any search, like the name of my favorite hometown pizza place, ‘Punch Pizza in Minneapolis.’ You can also search by voice for addresses like ’802 Washington Avenue Southeast’ or search for other another pizza place to try by speaking, ‘pizza restaurants.’ Currently supported languages include multiple English accents and Mandarin Chinese.” Google has added Buzz for mobile, which lets users use the Google Buzz layer to see what’s going on around them, or to post tot he layer themselves. You can use this to share pictures, news, etc. Google also syncs your personalized search suggestions and starred places with the new Blackberry version of Google Maps. Other new features include: – Use Labs to try experimental features like the Scale Bar or Terrain layer (great for hiking enthusiasts!). – See nearby businesses at an address or location by selecting a point from the map.

Social Media May Get Much More Convenient for Businesses

As we reported last week , some significant news was announced regarding the open web, and the direction social networking is headed in. Cliqset and Status.net announced that for the first time ever, the users of two independent, public web entities are able to communicate with each other, without being on the same service as the person they are communicating with. These two services accomplished this using the Salmon protocol, a technology that’s already on Google’s list to implement with Buzz . Would you find value in communicating with a user of a social network you didn’t belong to?
